Alko

Isn't this funny? I will need to go to Alko today! It will be too crowded tomorrow for the celebration Vappu...

I will be "entertaining" this 1st of May, i.e. Labour Day long weekend, and need some wine, Champagne and beer to make it merrier. I still have hard time remembering that I can't just go to the corner liquor store... or a plain supermarket or CVS (!!!) for my booze. Bummer :)

Alko is the national alcoholic beverage retailing monopoly in Finland.
It is the only store in the country to sell beer over 4.7%, wine and spirits.
Founded in 1932, owned by the Government.

Summer Clothes

Have you already taken your "summer wardrobe" out of the closet? I am in the very process of taking it out of the suitcases where mine has remained since January - most of the winter those (huge) suitcases remained on the balcony for lack of space in our temporary apartment... And just like every year, the kids seem to have grown out nearly all of theirs. Phhhh!

I love these flat non-slippery hangers I purchased at Marshalls.

Not My Train

Not many trains stopping at my station right now and am not minding much either. Happy with what I have, for once. It's Friday, I'll head home to my loved ones and wish you all a joyful, sunshine-filled weekend with lots of morning croissants and hazelnut coffee.

Washi Tape & Ikea

My new home is getting some shape. It's about time, too as we did move in almost two weeks ago! It didn't take me long to empty the boxes, but there was an unpleasant surprise in the bathroom - humidity - and that made us need to wait until it was fixed. And you know how much I like waiting..., right?

Washi tape and Ikea, the poor mom's tricks to kids' room decoration. At least temporarily, this adds to the half-empty room's "charm". (I still need some crucial furniture for the room, beside the bunk bed.)

Washi tape is from MoMa store, NYC
The shelf is from Ikea, Vantaa

In Retrospect...

The last months have been very hard. The first months after our return to Helsinki - at least according to my photostream - have been pale, colourless, unfinished. We have been lost to the world and to ourselves a bit. Trying to just hang in there.

In retrospect, this weird, snowless, dark winter has been a roller-coaster of negative emotions. The initial severe, numbing shock of having to come back "home" after three years in the U.S. soon turned into an excruciating feeling of loss of self and everything that was enjoyable about life.

(Losing one's soothing routines is very harmful as new routines take time to develop - in the worst case first they're but a series of have-to-do-in-order-to kind of things and do not carry any significance, let alone bring pleasure.)

The pain soon turned into a devastating rage. Rage against people (conceited!), food (disgusting!), weather (a joke?), habits (stupid!), everything (horrible!) about Finland. Everything seemed negative and it became impossible not to voice it. I voiced it, the kids voiced it and we had many conversations ending in me shouting: "Yes, I know that everything sucks! But this is what there is now, and we'll just have to deal with it!"

At the same time, life went on. Every day was a "new beginning". Which always has such a positive ring to it! New beginnings are, however, my very speciality and I know that the colours of new beginnings usually are as follows. If not altogether dark, not so bright anyway. Pale at best.

I bought a table and a few chairs, my brother lent us some mattresses...
but you still wouldn't call it a "dining room" or "bedroom", would you?

Luis having "yummy" "cheese fondu" with some bread and apple slices...

Walk to the bus stop... In January it was pretty dark in the mornings.

Cold calls for creativity. "Layer-dressing" is what it's called here.
"Total disaster" is what it's called everywhere else.

Maia and the Cathedral of Helsinki.

Bambi has brought us comfort and consolation. God bless dis lil dog!

Forest Walk

Spring time is ahead this year. Hhmm..., in Central Europe spring flowers are blooming and in DC cherry trees are blossoming. Here in the North we have these shy, little blue flowers coming out in the forest and the only green is that of our evergreens.

The hilly lands near where my mother lives were formed during Ice Age. This is where the border of the kilometres thick ice once was. It is not uncommon to find a huge lump of stone somewhere in the middle of the plains, rolled there by the ice very, very long time ago.

Today, we walked from Pispala to Pyynikki and I must say, I do love Tampere very much.

Big Adventure

When the kids are travelling, it is hard for both me and Bambi. The house feels empty and (too) quiet. It is of course, nice too, in a way. Especially in the middle of a bathroom renovation...

So, it's decided. My lil doggydog is getting ready for a real adventure - a train trip to Tampere. We're spending Easter with gramma the two of us.

Happy Easter holiday, everyone!

Me's Dorian Gray

I have very much of a  The Picture of Dorian Gray kind of situation at hand. You see, my artist mother made a bronze sculpture, or mould rather, of my face when I was in my twenties.

Now, it reminds me of what my face once looked like and what it no longer does look like. There.

“It is only shallow people who do not judge by appearances. The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible....”
Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray

 Happy Wednesday!

I didn't grow one or marry one. I bought one from Ikea.
And it feels really great to have one of my own.

Almost There But Not Quite Yet

Una mujer al borde de un ataque de nervios... Well, I haven't quite lost it yet but will if anything goes wrong tomorrow.

We're finally MOVING - not to another continent this time - to another neighborhood to a bigger apartment and BETTER LIFE! Hope so.

Never again!

Longing to Travel to Far Away Places...

Call me an escapist but after the crucial "one hundred days" in Helsinki, Finland, my longing to get outta here remains strong. The farther the better. California, Brazil, Thailand... are kinda on the top of my list...

Stripes Strike Pose

I love stripes.

Two tees from Zara and one from Lindex. Cheap!

Maytag... I Wish!

My desperation knows no limits as I am comparing home appliances online for my new HOME.

Obviously, they don't sell Maytag anywhere near Finland. UK is probably the closest where you find these Ferraris of washing.

(Thankfully) I will have to content myself with something a lot less glorious and a lot cheaper. Grrrr.

My dream combo...

This alone would do.
This SMEG dishwasher, however, is sold in Gigantti...
