Eyes Go Red

It is Finnish Independence Day tomorrow and I am to party to that end t o n i g h t (ppssttt! I also have some very close family members - personal friends of the Finn Prez - going to the "castle" this year!)

I think I'll wear my little red dress (DC Embassy goes rather informal on the dress code -  I have been the most over-dressed person every year and am not going to commit the same error on my LAST time there...)

The question is: should I not only accessorize with a red clutch but also RED EYES? Or what?

(Almost) Absolutely No Shopping

This year, I (involuntarily) stepped aside from all the big fuss of the great start of the holiday shopping season. On Black Friday, I was home reading a book all day. On Small Biz Saturday, I went to a flea market and to the National Portrait Gallery. Today is Cyber Monday, and I haven't done any online shopping.

Well, the day's still young, I could still change my mind. But do not feel like it. I am so depressed and for a reason. I am still kinda waiting for a miracle to save me from the inevitable. But I think time's running out on me. And there's nothing nobody can do about it.

So much for the Fave Day, huh!
I feel she might be able to relate...

Found this though at the District Flea,,, for 6 dollars!

Mirka & the Monuments PART II

We kept getting wiser each day, as my friend Mirka and her family from Brussels were visiting.

This Monument visit was "adults only" and took place on a particularly beautiful Sunday morning. We walked by the Vietnam War Memorial (been there) to the Lincoln Memorial (been there) with its Reflecting Pool finally - after some two years of renovations - filled with water and all pretty.

Mirka & the Monuments PART I

I still have some unpublished photos from a few weeks ago when my friend Mirka and her family were visiting us. We went to all the usual suspects and here comes a roll - or two - from the MLK (also featured here) and the Tidal Basin (also featured here) and the Jefferson Memorial (not featured previously although visited many times.)

You can take a girl outta America, but she'll be back!!!

Can't say the kids were too anxious to see all this.
We did hear some monumental whining along the walk...
Jefferson. Booriing!

O-kay, let's go! MOM!!!

The good things about this season are so many!

I love the dark. It calls for candles and, even better, Christmas lights.
I love the food. The lasagnas, lamb chops, mashed potatoes, pasta and soups with Brie cheese.
I love the warm air of the heater on my skin after a freezing shower...
I love the walks with my dog and seeing the trees go all colors.
I love the TV sessions with my kids and the cups of tea.
And I love the awaiting of Christmas.

I'd also love the shopping BUT... Some time ago already, I went From Prada to Nada. Well, now it's rather From Prada to Absolutely Nada. (Luckily we're in Amurikkah: Holiday Bargain Sale!)

...I love these GIFT GUIDES. See MORE of this one by American Apparel...

Halloween Pixx

[insert excuses for not having shown my nose in the blog lately here]

[insert "words cannot tell how much fun we had this Halloween" here] [let pixx tell here]

My old old old friend Mirka and her family of four came to D.C. for a visit just in time for Halloween. We had a great 10 days filled with the ambiance of 8 people living in our one-bedroom apartment - 4 adults and 4 kids - plus the dog and the guinea pig [insert expression of extreme thankfulness of the death of the hermit crabs here]

The zombie theme elaborated by our pre-teens...
They spent days and days planning the costumes (ripped T-shirts) and make-up and Hawaii accessories...

Our distinguished guests: Mme and Monsieur.

Finnish girls FOEEVAAAAAA!

Adult costumes were more or less fusion this year.
Jay was "George Washington turns pirate" and I was "Minnie on steroids"

Greedy zombie.

Yoda.. I mean Bambi was sulking and did not want to pose for photos.

Fashion Friday - LV Bag

Yes,I have one. I got one before I turned 40. I used to think that meant "success". I still kinda do. But I had forgotten to use it for awhile. I'm now using it again (as a vanity kit) as I'm rushing from one job to another, and sure do benefit from some freshening up of my make-up at times...

Audrey H. had one, too as early as in the 60s. Yeah, that is precisely why I have one, too. you guessed that right.

All Time Favourites

Before we moved to the United States, some two years ago, I compiled a list of my all time favourite American things. My blog was still mostly in Finnish then, but here's the complete list of those posts again.

Can't say my fave things have changed much, can I...

Kaikkien aikojen Amerikan suosikkini on Jackie O. alias Jacqueline Lee Bouvier Kennedy Onassis

Kanadalaisen toimittajan Naomi Kleinin kirja No Logo (2000) nimesi Starbucksin yhdeksi maailman brändiöykkärisuperpahiksista.

Kaikkien aikojen Amerikan suosikit -sarjassani kolmossijalle pääsee The Max Factor Beauty Museum. Museo sijaitsee vuonna 1935 perustetun Max Factor -kauneussalongin tiloissa, Hollywoodissa.

Heywood (Woody) Allen is my All Time American Favourite number 4. Great great comedian whom I felt in love with at the age of 9.

Noin 9-vuotiaana näin elokuvan Sleeper (1973). Se oli rakkautta ensi katsomalla.

Rockefeller Center on suosikkini New Yorkin rakennuksista.

All Time American Favourites number 6, and these fashion blogists agree:

Madonna Louise Ciccone on aina ollut THE suosikkini! Ja kuuluu tietysti myös kaikkien aikojen jenkkisuosikit-listalle. Ilot ja surut on jaettu runsas pari vuosikymmentä...

...mutta livenä tiemme kohtasivat eka kerran vasta Helsingissä 6.8.2009.

All Time American Favourites Series continues...

Breakfast at Tiffany's... (Ihana ihana traileri!)

Oih ja voih, kaikkien aikojen Amerikka-suosikkini numero 8 on Tiffany & Co., josta Holly Golightlyn tavoin haaveilen joskus ostavani jotakin...

Jelly Beanseja valmistaa Jelly Belly -niminen yritys, ja niitä on kai valmistettu jo sisällissodan aikana...

Ekat kahdeksan makua olivat: Very Cherry, Lemon, Cream Soda, Tangerine, Green Apple, Root Beer, Grape ja Licorice.
10. Tennessee Williams

Kymmenennen sijan ottaa näytelmäkirjailija Tennessee Williams.

Oma suosikkini Williamsin teoksista on Lasinen eläintarha (1944), ja erityisesti kohtaus, jossa Tom Wingfield, sisarensa Laura ja jäääätävä äitinsä Amanda nauttivat aamiaista... Ah!

Luis Is 11

My little Luis turned 11 on October 5th, and had a sleepover with just a couple of buddies over at DAD'S!!! Male fun at its best: Infinite hours of video games, Five Guys Burgers and a movie night. And of course ever-faithful Maia had to join the fun...

Cannot but LOVE my big, newly indepenDISH... kiddies.
Which was very good. I had a FREE night, just went over to take these shots the next morning and hadn my present to the Bday boy - the FIFA14 game I bought with my last money. Parenting. Changes. But it ah, so great. Always.

First of All... Malala

It's been a while. Life's been so breathtakingly busy... No time or energy for blogging. And I have so many things to share now. FIRST, however, I wanna talk about Malala Yousafzai, 16. Why? Cause she's been in the States these past days and we have all fallen in love with her!

Malala's personal charisma is awesome! I saw her on TV, and she visited The Obamas and she has a NYC based Malala Fund now and she was a favorite for the Nobel Prize for Peace this year and she is just

g r e a t!!

Today, she was quoted by The Washington Post as she spoke to world financial leaders at the Annual Meeting of the World Bank and the IMF.

Luis and Maia are so getting THIS for Christmas! Photo from The Washington Post
May Allah bless this girl!

I Am Wearing - Parka

Chilly fall is here! Luckily, the temperatures are still hanging around 20 Celcius, give or take. Still, it's time for some FALL FASHION. (Zara's most recent LOOKBOOK has oh, so preeeetty stuff, for those of you who can afford that level of luxury...)

Personally, I shop at Marshall's and a lot less than before, despite my eight jobs (you do the math...). This "find" was 40 dollars and it is just cool enough and just warm enough for just now.

I usually tend not to go this shade of green as with my short hair it often gives me the 'military lesbian' look I rather try to avoid at whatever cost. No offense.

Remember these Ray Ban shades? They're still very much alive.
Remember these shoes?
